36.Sh DESCRIPTION
37The file
38.Pa /etc/phones
39contains the system-wide
40private phone numbers for the
41.Xr tip 1
42program.
43This file is normally unreadable, and so may contain
44privileged information.
45The format of the file is a series of lines
46of the form: <system-name>[\ \et]*<phone-number>.
47The system name is
48one of those defined in the
49.Xr remote 5
50file and the phone number is constructed from any sequence of
51characters terminated only by ``,'' or the end of the line.
52The ``='' and ``*'' characters are
53indicators to the auto call units to pause and wait for a second dial
54tone (when going through an exchange).
55The ``='' is required by the
56.Tn DF02-AC
57and the ``*'' is required by the
58.Tn BIZCOMP
591030.
60.Pp
61Only one phone number per line is permitted.
62However, if more than
63one line in the file contains the same system name
64.Xr tip 1
65will attempt to dial each one in turn, until it establishes a connection.
