38.Sh NAME
39.Nm phones
40.Nd remote host phone number data base
41.Sh DESCRIPTION
42The file
43.Pa /etc/phones
44contains the system-wide
45private phone numbers for the
46.Xr tip 1
47program. This file is normally unreadable, and so may contain
48privileged information. The format of the file is a series of lines
49of the form: <system-name>[\ \et]*<phone-number>. The system name is
50one of those defined in the
51.Xr remote 5
52file and the phone number is constructed from any sequence of
53characters terminated only by ``,'' or the end of the line.
54The ``='' and ``*'' characters are
55indicators to the auto call units to pause and wait for a second dial
56tone (when going through an exchange). The ``='' is required by the
57.Tn DF02-AC
58and the ``*'' is required by the
59.Tn BIZCOMP
601030.
61.Pp
62Only one phone number per line is permitted. However, if more than
63one line in the file contains the same system name
64.Xr tip 1
65will attempt to dial each one in turn, until it establishes a connection.
