36.Sh NAME
37.Nm ste
38.Nd "Sundance Technologies ST201 Fast Ethernet device driver"
39.Sh SYNOPSIS
40.Cd "device miibus"
41.Cd "device ste"
42.Sh DESCRIPTION
43The
44.Nm
45driver provides support for PCI Ethernet adapters and embedded
46controllers based on the Sundance Technologies ST201 PCI Fast
47Ethernet controller chip.
48.Pp
49The Sundance ST201 uses bus master DMA and is designed to be a
503Com Etherlink XL workalike.
51It uses the same DMA descriptor
52structure and is very similar in operation, however its register
53layout is different.
54The ST201 has a 64-bit multicast hash filter
55and a single perfect filter entry for the station address.
56It supports both 10 and 100Mbps speeds in either full or half duplex
57using an MII transceiver.
58.Pp
59The
60.Nm
61driver supports the following media types:
62.Pp
63.Bl -tag -width xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
64.It autoselect
65Enable autoselection of the media type and options.
66The user can manually override
67the autoselected mode by adding media options to the
68.Pa /etc/rc.conf
69file.
70.It 10baseT/UTP
71Set 10Mbps operation.
72The
73.Ar mediaopt
74option can also be used to select either
75.Ar full-duplex
76or
77.Ar half-duplex
78modes.
79.It 100baseTX
80Set 100Mbps (Fast Ethernet) operation.
81The
82.Ar mediaopt
83option can also be used to select either
84.Ar full-duplex
85or
86.Ar half-duplex
87modes.
88.El
89.Pp
90The
91.Nm
92driver supports the following media options:
93.Pp
94.Bl -tag -width xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
95.It full-duplex
96Force full duplex operation
97.It half-duplex
98Force half duplex operation.
99.El
100.Pp
101For more information on configuring this device, see
102.Xr ifconfig 8 .
103.Sh HARDWARE
104The
105.Nm
106driver supports Sundance Technologies ST201 based Fast Ethernet
107adapters and embedded controllers including:
108.Pp
109.Bl -bullet -compact
110.It
111D-Link DFE-530TXS
112.It
113D-Link DFE-550TX
114.It
115D-Link DFE-580TX
116.El
117.Sh DIAGNOSTICS
118.Bl -diag
119.It "ste%d: couldn't map ports/memory"
120A fatal initialization error has occurred.
121.It "ste%d: couldn't map interrupt"
122A fatal initialization error has occurred.
123.It "ste%d: watchdog timeout"
124The device has stopped responding to the network, or there is a problem with
125the network connection (cable).
126.It "ste%d: no memory for rx list"
127The driver failed to allocate an mbuf for the receiver ring.
128.It "ste%d: no memory for tx list"
129The driver failed to allocate an mbuf for the transmitter ring when
130allocating a pad buffer or collapsing an mbuf chain into a cluster.
131.It "ste%d: chip is in D3 power state -- setting to D0"
132This message applies only to adapters which support power
133management.
134Some operating systems place the controller in low power
135mode when shutting down, and some PCI BIOSes fail to bring the chip
136out of this state before configuring it.
137The controller loses all of
138its PCI configuration in the D3 state, so if the BIOS does not set
139it back to full power mode in time, it will not be able to configure it
140correctly.
141The driver tries to detect this condition and bring
142the adapter back to the D0 (full power) state, but this may not be
143enough to return the driver to a fully operational condition.
144If
145you see this message at boot time and the driver fails to attach
146the device as a network interface, you will have to perform a second
147warm boot to have the device properly configured.
148.Pp
149Note that this condition only occurs when warm booting from another
150operating system.
151If you power down your system prior to booting
152.Fx ,
153the card should be configured correctly.
