managing highly available GEOM providers. 43.Pp 44.Nm 45allows the transparent storage of data on two physically separated machines 46connected over a TCP/IP network. 47Only one machine (cluster node) can actively use storage provided by 48.Nm . 49This machine is called primary. 50The 51.Nm 52daemon operates on block level, which makes it transparent to file 53systems and applications. 54.Pp 55There is one main 56.Nm 57daemon which starts new worker process as soon as a role for the given 58resource is changed to primary or as soon as a role for the given 59resource is changed to secondary and remote (primary) node will 60successfully connect to it. 61Every worker process gets a new process title (see 62.Xr setproctitle 3 ) , 63which describes its role and resource it connect or the connection fails, it will try to re-establish 104the connection every few seconds. 105Once the connection is established, the primary 106.Nm 107will synchronize every extent that was modified during connection outage 108to the secondary 109.Nm . 110.Pp 111It is possible that in the case of a connection outage between the nodes the 112.Nm 113primary role for the given resource will be configured on both nodes. 114This in turn leads to incompatible data modifications. 115Such a condition is called a split-brain and cannot be automatically 116resolved by the 117.Nm 118daemon as this will lead most likely to data corruption or loss of 119important changes. 120Even though it cannot be fixed by 121.Nm 122itself, it will be detected and a further connection between independently 123modified nodes will not be possible. 124Once this situation is manually resolved by an administrator, the resource 125on one of the nodes can be initialized (erasing local data), which makes 126a connection to the remote node possible again. 127Connection of the freshly initialized component will trigger full resource 128synchronization. 129.Pp 130A 131.Nm 132daemon never picks its role automatically. 133The role has to be configured with the 134.Xr hastctl 8 135control utility by additional software like 136.Nm ucarp 137or 138.Nm heartbeat 139that can reliably manage role separation
